BesserTrim - From motorcycle engines to garden engines!
If you look back to BesserTrim’s origins, you will see why we are an innovative company that understands and excels in products that are highly engineered.
We’re a family run business that dates back to 1908, when our original company ‘Meetens’ was formed by an acclaimed TT and endurance motorcycle rider in the 20s – known by the name T.G. Meeten. Meeten developed and manufactured the S.O.S range of motorcycles and so this famous name soon became synonymous with T.G.'s slogans 'So Obviously Superior' and 'So Often Successful'. Something we still aspire to today. Not long after World World 2, Meeten's business partner, Margaret Child OBE (pictured below) realised that Meetens must be diversified to keep up with a changing market and Meetens Industrial Engines was formed.
This wise decision ensured the company's survival and a healthy business which was passed over to nephew Keith Child when the company moved to Wimbledon in 1986. Keith's legacy on retirement was a successful industrial engines business and a burgeoning garden machinery business.
A truly family affair
Keith was supported by his sons, Paul and Brian, both of whom had a hands on roll in continuing T.G.'s proud tradition of product and service excellence.
Following the retirement of Keith Child, the company, now known as Meetens Limited, was split into two, with the industrial engine business continuing in the name of Meetens Limited with Paul at the helm and the garden machinery business continuing as Bessertrim Limited in Turners Hill, West Sussex with Keith’s son Brian (pictured right) leading the company.
BesserTrim continues to be a flourishing garden machinery business that services brands such as HSS and Travis Perkins and is proud of it's family own status.
Product excellence remains at the forefront.
We've continued to embrace T.G.'s proud tradition of product and service excellence and also continue to innovate to stay at the leading edge of garden machinery.
Perhaps nothing inspires inventors more than inefficiency. For retired businessman Henry Bessinger, it was the inefficiency of a traditional garden trimming head that lead him to develop his invention, ‘The Weed Thrasher’.
"The normal head on my weed trimmer would jam up all the time," Henry explained. "It was to the point where I spent more time loading and fixing it than I actually spent working in my garden."
His new innovation was an accessory that could easily fit most petrol (gas) powered trimmers, and would virtually eliminate jamming thanks to the unique 'key hole' locking system. Henry secured patent rights world-wide and the Weed Thrasher® took the US by storm.. Known as the BesserTrim Grass Cutting System in the UK, BesserTrim have further developed Henry’s invention and is the foundation for the range of products Bessertrim manufactures today.
